Monsoon’s here. Finally the earth getting greener and people, alive. Because this year the summer was blistering.
I would go upto the roof in evenings, immediately arid barren air would gust through my face, so hot and dry that it would send a shiver. Crows, pigeons and parrots, parched flying from tree to tree in search of water.
In the bit of water we had in the roof, these birds would pring and splash, fearless and carefree of any human approach.
It was a torturous summer. World ablaze. Dehydrating the souls.
And then one day cool winds started to blow. Grey clouds stirring the horizon obscuring the blazing sun. A beautiful murky canvas.
And then the clouds clash against eachother. The sky gets divided in silver. Children hide behind covers. Lovers rejoice.
Rain. Unabashedly breaking down from the nebulous sky.
I love rain in the early morning hours. The sky looks like an oil painting. Our garden is visible from my room. Its looks like a rain forest. Rather, my little Enchanted Forest.
Dark green leaves quavering with the splashing of the blobbing rain drops. The wood wet and damp, giving them a primeval look. Small rivulets streaming through the soil. Everything so silent other than the thrust of the rain. You can almost expect an unicorn to sneak up ๐
I don’t like it when the clouds tease you with a dry drizzle. Makes the nature look sad. The days gloomy and me melancholy. Everything seems unnecessarily cold and damp.
But I love it when it rains at night. More like a tempestuous storm threateningย to throw the world in a whirlwind, clouds thundering the sky, wild winds whaling, plants euphoniously swinging with the screeching symphony of the gales.
I almost feel like going out in the middle of a night among such ecstasy….around the block….to the park, and then come back home. Or my parents’ll call the police ๐ :p
But it’ll be a very mysterious and cryptic trip. ๐
But something I really love to do in rain is swimming. The cold water gets darker and colder. Droplets dancing on the surface. You can go down and down into the cold placid pool. A beautiful calmness and stillness engulfing you. The free flowing weightlessness……its such a pure feeling.
And then coming back on the surface. A deep crystal breath. Rain water glistening against your face. Chilly winds caressing you and dark phantom clouds above.
Another thing I always wanted to do is run ecstatically in an open field.Or even in a green maze. ย In heavy rain. Azure. Carefree. Catch me, if you can. Show me your wild sparkling eyes. Its celebration time!!
And when none of these are happening, I just stay indoors with a book, watching rain….all windows open. Strong winds wheezing in my room.
Every year a couple of windows break on sudden storms. But this year a door also broke. We got new glass doors for the rooms…..and the top portion came crashing down on the last storm. It was pretty sad coz we loved the doors.
We have fun in rain. We write poems about it. We sing songs about it. We dance. And we should. Because it is that splendid. But, how precious is water?
So many parts of the world is dying without water. People getting infection and bacteria due to unclean water. Scientists claim that by 2030 half of the world’ll come under high water stress. Because ground water is depleting. Glaciers melting. Rivers polluted.
Its not always possible for us to conserve rain water. But we can try not to waste any kind of fresh water supply in our homes.
People die for a drop of water. Its not good to waste it.
Have fun. Responsibly.
Bye bye,
Mithai

It is wonderful to see such expression on one so young.
Should you ever find yourself in a pensive thoughtful place and just maybe in need of a little inspiration might I suggest one of those 5 albums I’d take to that mythical island, Carole King’s, “Tapestry”.
Be well Mithai

No one loves the rain as much people in the Indian subcontinent do. Even when it floods your city every year, like it does in Bombay! ๐

But rain songs n poems are written all over the world….so I guess people everywhere love it?? ๐

Listen to songs about rain, Indian songs are all about joy and rebirth and love and desire, English songs are about loss and pain and tears. We love the rains because they come after the most grueling summer, Most Europeans hate it because it just makes it colder and damper for a while. It’s all about perception. ๐

Yes I completely agree to this!! Summers and being an agro based country….rain is essential to us ๐ But it can become quite a pain in very cold countries….. ๐

A wonderful “cool” post. I am not interested in rains, but now after these positive points on rain, I am kinda liking it. The last lines are so true but, the global warming is gradually reducing, don’t worry, we will strive to eradicate it.

This summer has not been good for my country, around 1150 people have died till date due to heat in Karachi the biggest city of Pakistan (i don’t live there) . Its the Mumbai of Pakistan has a tropical climate as its with the sea but this year things have just gone worse, monsoon didnt came on time this year and they had to drop artificial rain by planes as so many people were dying with heatstroke’s. Monsoon is a big blessing for this region, plz remember Karachi in prayers that the heatwave cools off. I enjoyed your post ๐

I’m very sorry to hear about such disastrous condition due to heat to our neighboring country. I pray for them with all my heart. Its very sad that Karachi has to suffer such scorching heat. May all the innocent souls rest in peace.
Monsoon was late in India too this year. But yes….not as horrifying as this.
I pray Pakistan gets heavy rains soon.
And its raining so heavily in India that cities are getting flooded. Some people lost their lives too as well as helpless 9 rare Asian lions died in Gujarat due to flood.
Prayers for all the innocent souls.

What a pleasure to read this! Your writing was so vivid I could feel like I was experiencing the onslaught of the rain with you, though I’ve never experienced a monsoon. Rain means different things to different people. Some get a severe feeling of depression from the rainy, cloudy days, while other appreciate the need for water to nourish our earth. Personally, a walk in the rain is refreshing, but I like to have either a raincoat or umbrella so I don’t get soaking wet.
