Recently I read a very interesting bit of information,
George Washington, the first and one of the greatest Presidents of America, believed in Giants. That once upon a time there were giant human beings, tall as 4 storeyed buildings, who roamed the Earth.
But it’s not at all surprising. Every person living in the 1700s believed in giants.
Because, the huge skeletons of dinosaurs, estimated to be about 30-40 feet, discovered in the 1600s, were misinterpreted as Giant Humans who used to once live in the Earth.
It wasn’t until 1842 that Sir Richard Owen classified the skeletons as ‘Dinosauria‘ meaning bad reptile, long after George Washington’s death.
That makes me wonder…….what implications can it have on a society in general…… the belief in Giants??
Did they live in constant fear of the Giants returning once again?
Did it give materiality to Superstition?? Did it in anyway influence medical science to carry on research of how could human beings be so huge.
Giants, squashing small lanky humans, cooking them in broth, probably people of that time did believe in this.
‘Jack and the Beanstalk‘, the fairy tale every child knows, first came into notice during 1734.
Guess people did take the Giants pretty seriously.
But something even more surprising is, according to Historians, the story is around 5000 years old.
The fact that such a folklore existed 5000 years ago, make you wonder even more archaic things.
Did the ancient civilizations ever find fossils and skeletons of dinosaurs?
Maybe they did find some bones, which were too big to be matched with any living creature of at that time.
Moreover, with no technology of Carbon Dating, they didn’t even realise that those bones and fossils were more than Millions of years old.
And thus they concluded, that behind the mountains, inside the deepest caves, rests a giant dragon.
Because if you compare, some of the flying dinosaur skeletons, look quite familiar to the dragons.
The Cyclops, the one eyed giants from Rome, probably was another situation of imagination running wild after finding a huge dinosaur bone.
The most famous mythological character, Minotaur, too looks like a prehistoric giant animal.
Or the Basilisk. Sometimes its interpreted as a rooster and sometimes as a scaly snake.
An ariel dinosaur…….or even a terrestrial one could match the description!
Its not surprising that if a person with not much idea about earth’s past, evolution, genetics, adaptation to habitat……. suddenly finds a skeleton of a Mammoth or a Sabertooth or the 42 feet giant snake Titanoboa…….the first conclusion would be of a terrifying monster, mentioned in civilizations all around the world .
Not much can be inferred just by looking at the skeletons.
And maybe the scheming village heads or religious heads played on those beliefs to further dominate and scare common people.
Like offering gold and young girls to the priests as gift, else these ‘monsters’ would attack the whole village. Probably the priests themselves would butcher up a few people and make it look like ‘angry monsters’.
Or scaring people about ‘Forbidden Forests‘ or ‘Caves of Monsters‘ so that all sorts of unethical work can go on without any public intrusion.
It seems as if every folklore and fairy tale has a point of origin. But a very twisted origin, that is.
Ofcourse there are many more theories regarding the concept of giants.
The evolutionary giant apes which were known to coexist with men even 100 thousand years ago. And could stand tall on 2 legs to the height of 10 feet or higher…… maybe that’s how we get tales of Yeti. Maybe they didn’t completely become extinct and were spotted by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norway, on their trip to Mt. Everest, as described in their accounts.
The strange wall paintings depicting giants, the various the tales of ‘Star People’ and many more. I myself believe in some of them.
But Giants looking like modern human beings and tall like a 4 storeyed building, just like in the fairy tales……I don’t know of thats possible. Only dinosaurs can reach that height according to me.
Imagination gets inspired by reality. The reality can be real yet not the kind of real we expected.
That’s all folks!!
Bye bye,
Mithai

Speaking of giants, I always wonder what kind of people the Bible (KJV) meant when it said, “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, etc.” (Genesis 6:4)
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.

We also have concepts of children of god and humans or human and demons who were very huge in structure and strength. They were probably much taller than average men.
But the giants I’m talking about are around 40ft tall….as tall as the dinosaur bones excavated during those times and were exhibited for common people to see.
Ofcourse we can’t say anything for sure….. everything is only a possibilityβΊ

Thank you for the kind reply. I’ve also seen the bones of a dinosaur excavated in our small island country but never heard of a legend of such a giant. Maybe it takes a great person to think of such a giant.

That was an interesting idea, Mithai π I always wonder, what happened to the people who lived during the dinosaur times? What stories did they share? They probably had no written history, but some stories might survive for their posterity.
Great idea, anyway π Have a happy New Year! xx

According to the fossils found dinos and humans didn’t coexist. Dinos became extinct 65 million years ago and the first humans came 6 million years ago. Still there can be other turns to this theory as well π
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wishing you a very Happy new year!! π

And a very intuitive imagination it is. Your musings, and observable research, on this topic have a material ring of truth to them. I can see where these stories of the ‘giants of old’ could have been inspired by the findings of huge dinosaur bones. The use of these by the shaman-priests as a spiritual tool to control the mind is also a logical next step.
I recently read the book Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. It describes the creation of “fiction” and myths as a stepping stone to humankind’s ability to progress beyond small tribes into civilized cities and states. An interesting read. Your ideas here remind me of some of the conclusions he arrives at in the book.

Thanks Mithai for stopping by my site. It’s always a pleasure to see you.
For a book about myths read The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers. I do believe that fiction and myth have caused great strides in human evolution, ever since humans started burying the dead in ceremony and ritual.

They have found large humanoid skulls in Peru which would have belonged to exceptionally tall people.
Then there were giants mentioned in the Bible like Goliath of Gath, Og of Bashan and the really tall inhabitants of the land of Canaan that Joshua’s spies observed.

Thank you. According from the American Museum of Natural History, modern scientists have found mammoths, mastodons, and woolly rhinoceroses that once lived in Greece. They’ve also found elephant fossils in ancient Tangier, Morocco. But as far as carbon 14 is concerned, they can’t date anything farther back than 90,000 years ago. So all that talk about millions of years ago can’t be right. You can’t get a bird from a dinosaur. They’re much different. The bible is also another source of information. It mentions about a dinosaur, a fire-breathing dragon, and giants. We were taught that those are myths, but even today giant squids and oarfish (sea serpent) still live. They said the coelacanth was dead. Well, they’ve found many living off of South Africa. Take care.
