One of the most interesting things in the world is meeting strangers.
So many stories take birth with just a short encounter with a stranger. Sometimes lives change. Or sometimes they just stay with you as sweet memories….. Or not so sweet memories, remember those movies about giving ride to psycho hitchhikers;)
Recently I had visited my friends house. She has been my friend since kindergarten.
But over the years, her mother has a very interesting story to share.
So she was 16 and had gone on a holiday with her family to sea side. She didn’t know swimming and when a huge wave came, she was swept under being pulled down by the currents far from anyone’s reach.
Just then a hand came from somewhere and pulled her out of the water and handed her to her parents.
She had briefly seen the guy. He was hardly 20 and was gone even before she could thank him.
A stranger had saved her life. But the story doesn’t end here.
8 years later.
She still hadn’t found any one special enough. Had completed her studies and was doing a job. Her parents wanted her to get married.
So one day a new guy got transferred to her office in a senior post. And guess who the guy was!!
Yess it was the stranger from 8 years back who had saved her life.
Almost sounds like a plot from the movies but that’s exactly what had happened!!
Needless to say he’s now my Friend’s dad!!
Her parents’s story is very famous in our school :p Every new term, a new teachers would ask my friend to narrate how her parents met.
They look like just any other couple…..but ordinary people with extraordinary stories!!
Even closest friends we have today were strangers at some point of time.
But I guess the most interesting type of strangers are the ones who stay strangers.
You don’t know anything about them. They don’t know anything about you.
Just someone…..very interesting in this huge world.
So I’ve compiled a list of 3 strangers I’ve come across till now who are still fresh in my mind!! :p :p
Stranger no 1 ♦♦
I was 6 years old. The stranger in this case was around 8 years old!! :p
We had gone on a trip to a sea side town. The resort we checked in had the biggest bluest most beautiful sparkling swimming pool just overlooking the ocean.
But I didn’t know swimming. I still got into the shallow kids side of the pool. And there was this kid dressed for the Olympics….with inflated yellow tyres around his hands, a red tyre around his waist, a red water cap, matching trunks and a pair of goggles :p
Our parents were sitting on either side of the pool.
We instantly became friends. Coz he was so friendly and NICE!!
I had also seen boys of our class…..kids of that age are kinda self obsessed….but he was really nice!! He got me a huge black tyre from above the pool so I could wade to the deeper side. He was always by my side so I don’t go in too deep and even offered me his precious yellow tyres :p :p
As I said….I had friends of his age….but he was exceptionally nice and kind!
I don’t exactly remember what we talked about……but we had a really nice conversation and he was extremely passionate about swimming. Next we went for some water slides near the pool. I had such a great time. And we had become such great friends. He was sooo cooperative and was trying his best to teach me swimming in 1 day :p But as I’m just emphasizing, he was really NICE.
Next day when I went back to the pool, they had already checked out.
I really don’t know anything about him. Just a stranger. Maybe that’s the best way.
I’m sure he’s leading his life in the best possible way coz he was such a nice and warm person.
Stranger no 2 ♦♦
I was 13 years old.
Our holidays were coming. I had gone shopping with mom to this particular place where you get really great traditional clothes.
Near that area is a very old boys school. They have produced some very famous alumni over the years. But they are famous for 2 things.
Their beautiful garden with antique statues.
And their even more beautiful boys :p :p
Our driver was parking the car. And I was looking around. And that’s when I saw stranger no 3 walking along the pavement.
He was probably studying in 11th or 12th grade and I guess he lived nearby.
Treat to the eyes!!. You could write novels on him :p :p
He was tall with an athletic body.
His hair was so black and shiny it almost looked violet in the sun. And the longest thickest darkest eyelashes. And he had red lips. How do boys get such red lips!!
Some kids from that school was returning home in the school bus and they were waving at him and he smiled and did a kind of a salute.
Just cute boy things :p :p
And then he passed our car.
Suddenly bent down his head and looked into the window. It got me quite startled. But then he started adjusting his hair.
And I realised he didn’t get to see me. He was just checking out his reflection as our windows were of very dark tinted black glass!!
What the hell!!
I told about him to my friends. I actually increased the sales of the showrooms around as all of them went shopping in that area;) :p
But everyone had the common verdict, ‘Never trust good looking boys’. But does that mean less good looking boys have better track records of being more trustful. I really don’t know. I haven’t trusted any boy like that till now to be the best judge…….but I think its not about looks. Its about upbringing and what paths you choose for yourself.
Looks do help attract quicker. But to make that attraction last or convert it into love…..you need a whole lot more.
Nevertheless stranger 3 was a devilishly handsome guy;) I wonder what’s he doing in life now!!
Stranger no 3 ♦♦
I forgot about this guy. Should have written about him earlier.
I was in 5th grade. And was the patrol monitor of a 1st grade classroom.
But before I tell you why this stranger was special lemme first tell you something that made him special.
Beyond the movies, even beyond the books…..Harry Potter was a journey for me.
My strongest memory of Harry Potter is reading the last page of every book…..when Harry and friends have completed another year at Hogwarts and looking out of the castle, promising each other to be in touch. To be eachother’s support and strength.
Its such a nostalgic, sad and happy feeling.
HP has been in my heart since I was 5 years old.
I’ve been engrossed. Obsessed. And in love with Harry Potter. If my soul was split in 7 parts, they would all reside in each HP book.
So one day I saw a lil guy sitting in the 1st grade classroom with a newspaper. It was 2005. Goblet of fire movie had just released. It was all over the papers. I don’t know how much he could read…..but he was certainly trying.
His name was Ram. A totally grandfather generation name. No one keeps this name anymore. But this guy was just unique.
He knew everything about Harry Potter. It was just a pleasure talking to him. The more and more I talked to him…..the more I realised that this guy was different than the others. Not only in case of HP. But just a nice, calm and sweet little kid.
I find immense happiness just talking about HP. And when someone on the otherside is as engrossed in it as you are they definitely become your fav person.
He had my number and sometimes would call me up and talk about all things HP.
I’m a single child.
But if I had a brother I would want him exactly to be like this. I really wanted him to grow up, achieve lots of things and be very happy and make me proud.
The reason he’s a stranger is coz I only know his name. Next year I went to 6th grade and our buildings changed…..rather campus changed as the secondary campus and primary campus are quite far from eachother. And I think he had also shifted to some other school.
He’s in 12th grade now I think. Final school year. After that the race to become an engineer…. or doctor….just like everyother kid. But then he’s a nice kid. I’m sure he’s rocking it!!
So they are some of my favorite strangers. Met them a long time ago. But still having the fondest memories.
There’s another story I wanna share. I had heard it in gym…..while I was on the treadmill and two women were chatting on the other treadmills. Even though not exactly about strangers…..but definitely a scary one. Lets name it…..‘Thank god it wasn’t a tyre puncture!! :p :p’
One of them with her husband had gone on a forest safari. They along with another couple had hired a jeep and went on a ride inside the forest. The forest is particularly known for having leopards.
After a few hours of driving they told their driver to stop the car in front of a narrow stream. Even though you are never supposed to get out of the car in a jungle…..they anyways did. After washing their hands in the water they decided to click some pictures. It was very fun and they all returned back home.
And then few days later they received a call from the couple who had mailed them some pictures clicked in their camera and wanted them to check it out.
And once they opened the mail they got the shock of their life.
In the picture, the driver was holding the camera and five of them were standing below a tree. Along with them something else was also captured in the frame.
The tail of a leopard, hanging from the tree, right above their heads.
It was a huge tree. The leopard had camouflaged itself there…..besides they didn’t even bother checking for a leopard above their heads :p :p
I guess you can call the leopard the unwanted stranger here :p;)
Anyways…..its really hot here. And I decided to prepare something cool for myself. Definitely not the most beautiful looking food you have seen in all the scrumptious and amazing food blogs…..but I gave it a try. Mango juice with bread, chicken nuggets and sponge cake….all ready made…..I just had to heat them and decorate on the plate :p
I’m eating only healthy things now;)
And then not to mention…..truck load of assignments. Sometimes back I was telling a really good friend here that our exams got over I’m freeee now. And BAM!! we again have exams after a week. I found this in google. Exactly my condition.
Can you imagine I didn’t even get to click selfies;) :p Yeah its that crazy!! haha :p :p
Some of you might have some very fascinating encounters at some point of life. We would love to hear about it.
Bye bye

Years ago a stranger helped me when, during a blizzard, my car was stuck on the icy parking lot at my apartment building. He pushed the car enough so I could drive it, and then without a word, he disappeared. Ten years later I met the man who would become my husband and I learned then that he and I had lived in the same apartment building at the same time, years before. And ~ you guessed it ~ he was the helpful stranger in the parking lot. It’s a small world!

Thank you so much for your kindest words as always!! 🙂 And its quite a story you shared from your school days. Good that corporal punishments have been banned. It was really tough.
And my my Maureen Potter seems to be quite a beautiful lady 😉 This is such a sweet story!! 😀 😀 What happened to her later?? Potters are always interesting 😉 And your other teacher remind me of Dolores Umbridge from HP.
Also reminds me of a friend who had a crush on our Maths teacher. We called her ‘perfume shop’ :p :p His crush lasted till the last day of school 😉 Thank you again for sharing such a fascinating story with me 😀 😀

You are an impossible romantic – how lovely people like you still exist!
When I was a child of 8 my parents took me to a military tattoo in England, part of which was an air show. I just loved how the helicopter made a bow to the audience at the end and applauded. Many decades later I married that helicopter’s pilot after meeting him in Portugal. He is 21 years older than me and we have been together for 23 years.

This is just a magical story. I mean how beautiful and incredible!! Made my day listening to your story. You were only 8 when you saw him and years later having him as the love of your life…..how beautiful!! 🙂 Did you see his face the first time you saw him?? What did you tell him when you again saw him in Portugal?? I just can’t grasp how lovely and destined it must have been!! 😀 😀

We met on stage in Portugal in an amateur drama production and got talking during rehearsals. He is a great entertainer. He told me that he had trained to be a helicopter pilot in the Army. I told him about my father’s Army career and that we were always taken to Military Tattoos. I loved especially loved the one in Tidworth, England. He then told me that he did air displays at Tidworth and devised a unique way to make the helicopter bow to the audience once. I was in my mid-thirties then. We did the math and worked out the year and realised that we had met before. Despite a big age gap, we became great friends instantly and discovered that we had lots in common: theatre, sailing, walking, travel, class background and most importantly, the same sense of humour. I felt sorry that he was a widower and tried to find him potential ‘girlfriends’. He went to visit relatives in Ireland one week; I missed him so much that I realised I was in love with him. I then had to fight off all the girlfriends I found him, before he confessed he had fallen in love with me at first (or second) sight, but was worried that he was too old for me. He is 80 years old this year, we have a 20 year old daughter and still do those same list activities we did then. We are thinking of down-sizing, now that our daughter has left home and going to live on a boat in Southampton.

I’m so happy for you guys. Age is just a number. Love and fun is all that matters 😀

This makes me think about some of the friendly strangers I’ve met in my short life. There have been a few that I still think about from time to time, because they left an impression on me. This post also makes me wonder if I’ve been that nice stranger for anyone else? To be entirely honest I believe I have in one case…although I didn’t keep in touch with the person I’m thinking about. It’s a shame, but that’s how life goes sometimes.

Its really a very nostalgic feeling. Strangers do affect us in deep places of heart….and only after we realise that we are never gonna meet again……it can make us feel really bad……about how it could have turned out….maybe it could have been really good…..or maybe not.
I’m sure the stranger you are talking about thinks about you and maybe wonders the same thing…… 🙂
And a lot of tigers……if they could talk would consider you a saviour and a very valuable stranger to them 😀

Haha if tigers could talk I’d constantly be asking them questions! I’d still keep my distance though…

Yeahh that you should :p I have a thing for lions. I try to watch every documentary on them….sometimes I just Google and look at their pictures……so beautiful and magnificent. My lifelong fantasy is adopting a lion cub…..but that ain’t happening anytime soon lol. But cats in general are a class of grace power and intelligence of their own. And I greatly appreciate your efforts to stop the heinous killings of tigers. Its so shameful and pathetic. I wish you all the success in your endeavors and hope the world also cooperate.

Thank you for your encouragement! And please never adopt a lion cub, or any big cats. It’s dangerous and abusive, because the cats often end up getting placed in sanctuaries or hurting people. Then they get “put down.” The pet trade is also a big part of the illegal wildlife trade, and when people own/post photos of themselves with cute baby big cats they’re inadvertently fueling the demand for exotic pets. I know you said you won’t be adopting any lion cubs soon, but I had to say that.
Disclaimer aside, if you like watching documentaries of lions I recommend checking out Wild Safari Live. It’s quite literally a LIVE African safari that’s streamed two times a day from South Africa. There are multiple lion prides in the area, so sometimes we get to watch them live! You can watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF47Za1lfjM or on their Nat Geo page: http://www.wildsafarilive.com/

Thank you so much for making me aware of it!! I knew that its not the best idea to keep these giant cats away from their natural habitats but thank you for shaping up your points like this 🙂 I do hope I get to see them up close someday. And once again thank you for referring to the channels. I’ll visit them the soonest!! 🙂 Its really cool and so great that something like this exists 😀

Fascinating vignettes- One never knows how often “strangers” will dovetail, in and out of our lives. People have appeared, and reappeared, in my life and in very dichotomous situations. Great cats, however, have only appeared to me in zoos or sanctuaries.
LikeLiked by 3 people
Yeahh strangers do leave their mark in a significant way no matter how short the encounter was.
Big cat’s haven’t appeared to me even in sanctuary. I had visited one….but didn’t get to see any. However I’ve actually cuddled a one in a ‘park’ in Thailand…… Even though I think they are always kept sedated. Yeah its sad for these cats.

Two sides to the one secret—
1) use a soft pencil and unlined A4 flip-pads, get your thoughts down as briefly as you can and just keep on editing. Cut the dross, keep only the facts (opinions are nice, but they aren’t facts). Build logical arguments etc etc (you’ve heard it all before); and …
2) Oodles of good coffee. But not (r) NOT within the catchment hours of going to bed. AND …
work hard, play hard.
BUT: the work comes first. You’ll have the rest of your life to play in … good luck!

You write really great articles on politics related matters with really nice moral quotients……. and the world needs nice people in politics you know……if all the good people backout and leave the place to the leeches……its not gonna help the world……
So maybe, just maybe you can consider politics for a change…. 🙂
Make the leeches get a lobotomy of the ‘leechiness’ (if that’s a word) 😉

wow, I really loved reading this. It’s just 7:39 in the morning, the sky has lots of clouds, seems to be it’s bound to rain…. and to read things like this, it just make me put into motion for the day. I may write on my blog about this! But to mention a stranger I met, it was in a big mall, and someone came with a tag on his shirt, he was not alone, there was another guy with him. He didn’t know me, and I didn’t know him either. But then he greeted me talking like he was a clown trying to make a child smile. he would compliment me as if I was suddenly a 6 year old little girl. I looked behind me in case it was not to me he was talking. I felt I was smiling. I turned to call my brother who was checking on some aftershaves and told him “look at that guy, he’s the strangest person I’ve ever seen” and when he turned his head… I could not find the guy anymore. I looked everywhere. But no trace of the guys I had just had an encounter with. I never forgot his way of greeting me and cheering me up. But I forgot his face completely.

As for the stranger you mentioned….. yeahh that was indeed a very strange stranger!! I can imagine how bewildering it must have been for you. It was indeed a very memorable encounter 😀 And the way he disappeared…….just makes it even more interesting!!
Btw what about the other guy who came in you mentioned about….did you get to see him??

No, he too disappeared with him but I did not notice him especially because he was not saying anything, just a smile. The other one was the one who talked to me in that odd but nice and happy way. I don´t know what ever happened. They just were gone, 😀
I love the rain in the mornings too. Tomorrow it´s going to be rainy again. Hugs, Mithai! ❤

You know Carmen you made me remember about another stranger that had slipped my mind. I really should have written about him in this post!! How could I’ve forgotten about this man!!
I was around 5 or 6. We had visited iskon temple. We are their life members. They got huge beautiful temples all round the country.
On one such visit I saw a foreigner guy sitting nearby with his daughter. And he was smiling at me. A really lively music was being played there and the conventional thing to do is clap to it. He was showing me and his daughter how to clap to it.
My parents were also sitting nearby.
Later I went to the adjoining restaurant for dinner with my parents. I didn’t like the veg food so I guess was throwing a bit of tantrums…….this guy had also come there with his daughter.
Suddenly he started making faces at me and his daughter.
Initially I found it very weird. But then I realised he’s just trying to make me and his daughter laugh and cheers us.
I also made faces at him……this continued for sometime. :p :p His daughter was also laughing. Later we bade goodbye to them.
He was a really nice and funny guy.
But the most interesting thing happened when I was 13.
We had visited another iskon temple at bangalore. And here I saw someone who looked a lot like him. His hairs had greyed a bit but still….I think it was him.
Whoa I’m sorry for the length.
I hope you had rain today!!
Lots of love and hugs to you 😀 😀

Thank you so much Akki for your always so nice and encouraging comments my dear friend!! 😀 😀
As for a stranger to drop from the heaven…. you can consider going to the ‘temple of strangers’ and pray 101 times to the god of strangers with compulsory fasting 2 days a week. And one fine morning you might find a stranger on your door step :p :p

About music…..
I like all sorts of music, just to name a few- 3 doors down, Deve Matthews, Metallica, Dido, Dar Williams and of course old rock and roll. Believe it or not I like some rap all though I don’t collect or go out of my way to listen to it, that a crazy statement….LOL!! I have music that I could listen for a year never listen to a repeat. I also love Indian classical, Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain and have you heard L Shankar great violinist, check him out, you may like him.
WoW that was a long response! Hope there are no typos.

Funny about the guy looking at himself in the car window! When I lived at the beach, people (strangers) would look at themselves in our living room windows not realizing… or maybe not caring… that we could see them from the other side! Enjoyed all your stories.

A delightful post, Mithai, and I barely know what to comment on. Love the leopard tail tale!
I often think of a stranger I met on a train and wonder how his life turned out. Myself and my two small children had an overnight journey back home after staying with my mother for a few days. There was a young aboriginal man across the aisle from me, nice looking, and all decked out in blue denim jeans and jacket and I think he carried a guitar case. He was alone and we exchanged a smile. I ended up sitting and chatting with him while my children slept and the night journey passed very pleasantly and a lot quicker than normal.
Speaking of coincidences, this one does not relate to people but houses. Before I moved here, I had only been in this area once before when my first husband and I travelled through to go interstate. It was autumn, and I saw this pretty cottage dwarfed by a huge elm tree. I remember looking back over my shoulder at it as we went by – an image that stuck in my head. Less than ten years later I came here with a new partner to that very house which belonged to his family for decades. I recognized it instantly and it felt like home.
Thanks for dropping by my blog and sprinkling it with love, Mithai. A pleasure to have you.

I’m sorry for the late reply Christine. We had a project submission at college, a crazy week!!.
What amazing stories Christine. Train journeys are the most interesting things in the world. So many short stories by some of the greatest writers of the world hv been written around train journeys. And so many classic movies made on the same.I really think its the best way to meet a stranger 😀 😀
I’m sure the man still remembers and has a smile on his face remembering the conversation he had with a ‘stranger’ 🙂
And I really think that universe leaves signs or hints about something that’s meant to happen. Or encourages you to pursue something that’s a step towards future. And that’s why we go back and forth about things or events that’s significant in our lives in the future 🙂 Its really an incredible story you shared about that cottage!!
The more I’m reading stories about encounters the more amazed I’m getting to know about such wonderful experiences.
Thank you so much for sharing them with me Christine!! ❤ ❤

Oh, about a thousand years ago, when I was a kid, we were at the beach and a wave knocked me over. I don’t think I was in any danger of drowning, but I felt like I was and some older girls pulled me upright and played with me for a while, lifting me over the waves. When I wasn’t as scared anymore, they went away. I don’t think I had the presence of mind to thank them, but I often think of them and their kindness.

That’s very intersting about the strangers in your life.
One of my favourite songs is the song Some Enchanted Evening from the movie South Pacific.

Some enchanted evening
you will meet a stranger
a very special stranger…
Your blog post reminds me of that song. 🙂

Wow its such a beautiful song Chris!! I just listened to it and took me to a different world 🙂 I also happened to come by the song ‘Some enchanted evening’ by Frank Sinatra. Both the singer’s voices are enchanting!! Thank you so much for referring this song!! 😀
And I just checked out your book. None like this definitely has never been recorded in History. Its very interesting and the themes you introduced into it…..really new and unique.
I’m sure everyone’s gonna like it, all my best wishes and congratulations to you.
And yayy finally we get to meet Dracul Van Helsing!! 😀 😀

Glad you enjoyed the song.
It’s really a beautiful movie too- the film South Pacific- it was a Technicolour musical movie made in the late 1940s.
But the island on which the movie was shot was really beautiful and enchanting.
If you ever get a chance to watch it on DVD or TV, I’d highly recommend it. 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind words on my vampire novel. 🙂

From materialistic point of view pretty good, we have computers in class and everything is fully equiped. The problem is that teachers are not very well paid which is a problem because there is practicly no “fight” for the seat of teacher. Which means that people that can not do anything else, they will go teaching. Also the school system did not change for tens of years which is a problem if you think about how much more we know about how mind learns. I think that school is teaching us mostly facts making us machines that just write what is on board. Instead they should learn us how to think by ourselves.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I think its the same condition in most countries. The pay is really not good so the dedication it needs to be a teacher, no one’s willing to give, often its the last resort. And has been very stagnant over the years as you said, specially in case of syllabus . Schools really do need to change…..but you are gonna find a lot more freedom in college from the conventional system…..even though not fully, they still go in the same path based on the syllabus and semesters.
Actually once you get into the industry professionally, that’s when you finally get to break out of the system and do things your way.
